MO Coalition for Roadway Safety reminds drivers of the importance of speed limits

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is reminding drivers there is a reason for posted speed limits: the safety of drivers.

Public Information Officer with Missouri Highway Patrol Troop H Sergeant, Jake Angle, says speed is important in avoiding crashes.

"Speed is one of the largest contributing factors to most traffic crashes.  So it's a critically-important topic.  People need to be aware.  Not only does speed contribute to traffic crashes, but it also gives drivers less time to react to things that are happening on the roadway.  This time of year, we've got harvest season, deer moving, and when people are speeding, it cuts down that time where they can react: braking time, stop, or maybe making a maneuver.  So speed is a critical factor when we talk about safety on the roadway."

Angle says going too fast in bad weather or road conditions will result in more crashes.

"During inclement weather and on inclement road conditions, people who are going to fast when they apply the brakes on slick road conditions and most people know that that's going to entail that vehicle is going to start sliding and flying out of control and contribute to an increase in traffic crashes.  We always tell people allow extra time on your trip, slow down, take your time."

Angle says there will be a statewide speed enforcement campaign from October 18th to the 20th where police will be highly visible and cracking down on speeding.
